The Cheshire cat is a fictional cat that featured in Lewis Carroll’s, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alice first meets the cat in the Duchess’s kitchen and then later outside, where he appears and disappears at will. He often cheers Alice up, but also annoys her. At one point the Cheshire cat disappears until nothing is left except his grin. In the 1951 Disney movie of Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire cat is portrayed as intelligent, but also mischievous, sometimes getting Alice into trouble but also helping her.
There have even been movies and theater shows about Cats. My favorite theater show is of course, the musical Cats. Cats was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. It first opened in London’s West End in 1981 and then on Broadway in 1982. The most well-known song to come out of the musical was Memory. Elaine Paige had a UK chart hit with the song, reaching number 5. It has since been recorded by at least 160 artists.

The Aristocats (1970), an animated movie produced by Walt Disney Productions. The movie is set in 1910 Paris and tells the story of a family of aristocratic cats. When their butler is kidnapped in order to gain their mistresses fortune, an alley cat helps them find him.
Cats Don’t Dance (1997) is an animated musical movie that sees a cat named Danny wanting to break into show business in Hollywood.
Cats and Dogs (2001) takes a look at the top-secret, high-tech espionage war going on between cats and dogs of which their human owners are unaware.
Cat in the Hat (2003) stars Mike Myers in the title role and is loosely based on the 1957 Dr. Seuss book of the same name.
